How much will this year’s Thanksgiving dinner cost?
New data from LendingTree reveals hosts will spend more than $431, on average.
But prices can vary from one store to the next.
So, NBC 10 News went on a shopping trip.
We compared prices on six Thanksgiving staples from six different grocery stores to find out which store offers the most savings.
The stores:
The food:
This wasn’t a scientific study. Some stores don’t carry these exact brand names, so we looked at the closest match.
We also priced equivalent store brand items.
For the sake of this ranking, we used the less expensive option for each item in our calculations.
So which store offers the most savings this Thanksgiving?
Obviously, turkey prices played a huge role in the overall cost. In most cases, a turkey was more than 60% of the total bill.
We shopped from Oct. 28 through Nov. 11, so some of these prices will likely drop over the next two weeks.
But if you’re looking to host Thanksgiving on a budget, our current research reveals Market Basket is the clear winner.
If you’re a stickler for brand names, Stop & Shop, Shaw’s, and Market Basket each had every product on our list.
Market Basket was still the cheapest, but with a total about double than if you buy store brands.
Brand names at Shaw’s and Stop and Shop bring each of those bills up about another 30%.
It’s also worth noting that other retailers like Walmart and Target are offering Thanksgiving “kit” deals, but to compare apples to apples, we stuck to traditional grocery stores.
